Stephen Hawking Life Events Timeline

Remembering ever loved Stephen Hawking who passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge in the early hours of March 14. Hawking’s passing was confirmed by his family in a statement.

“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever.”

Here’s a timeline of his life events.

January 8, 1942: Hawking is born in St Albans. Hid dad  Frank Hawking was a biologist, and his mother Isobel Hawking was a medical research secretary.

1959: Receives scholarship to attend University College, Oxford, from which he graduates with a degree in Natural Science.

1962: Begins graduate research in cosmology at Cambridge University.

1963: Diagnosed with the degenerative nerve disorder ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, at the age of 21.

1965: Stephen got a first in Physics from Oxford, and started a Ph.D. at Cambridge. He married Jane Wilde.

1966: He started to lose the use of his limbs but started researching black holes.

1970: Hawking’s work on black holes helped prove the idea of a Big Bang at the birth of the universe.

1974: He found that black holes could shine, an effect now known as Hawking radiation. He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society, aged 32, and one of the youngest people to achieve this honor.

1979: Aged 35, Hawking became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge – a post held by some of Britain’s most important physicists including Isaac Newton.

1985: While in Geneva, Hawking was admitted to hospital with a life-threatening bout of pneumonia. He lost his voice but adopted his famous speech synthesizer.

1988: A Brief History of Time was released and became one of the best-selling books of all time – nine million copies were sold.

1989: Made a Companion of Honor by Queen Elizabeth II.

1995: After 25 years of marriage and three children, Stephen and Jane Hawking separated and divorced. Stephen married his nurse, Elaine Mason.

2009: Former US President Barack Obama presented Medal of Freedom to Hawking.

2010: In his best-selling book The Grand Design, Hawking made more bold claims about the hunt for a theory of everything. Hawking backed a radical new idea, M-theory, which theorizes there is more than one universe.

2014: Eddie Redmayne gave an Oscar-winning portrayal of Hawking in the movie Theory of everything, based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity- My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking. This movie made Hawking’s name more popular.
