Whilst scrolling down the long list of news from last week, my eyes got stuck on one specific news by Time of India. It was about student suicides in India from 2014 to 2016.
I was astonished knowing that the number outrun 26,500. Educational issues, depression, drugs, broken families, teenage break-ups, the reasons for the current situation can be pointed to many. I just can’t believe that students in India are killing themselves at a fast rate, with 26 suicides reported every 24 hours.
According to the reports, Bengal and Maharashtra reported the most number of suicides and there are none reported from Lakshadweep.
Most psychologists say that clinical depression followed by conditions like schizophrenia and other mental health issues and addiction to drugs and alcohol are some of the main reasons responsible for the current situation.
“Students are unable to manage their stress. They don’t have a place to vent their thoughts either at home or at school or college. Many battles an identity crisis. Uncertain about their future, they begin to isolate themselves and eventually slip into depression”
– Nagasimha G Rao / Child rights trust, Bangalore
Where are we heading??
The lives of students are suffocated by social pressures and expectations. The immense pressure of fitting into the reality, the burden of living the life their parents wanted, painful desire for acceptance, student life is getting more suffocating than ever.
The emotional distress caused by relationships and family issues are adding to the existing scenario. When all the struggles and strain are mentally torturing our younger generation, no wonder why they are opting suicide as the final option. The situation is worsening day by day and we aren’t even aware of the whole scenario.
This drastic situation could destroy the future of any nation and I can’t believe how careless we are in handling such a tender concern.
What could be done?
We are following the primitive methods of the education system which tests the memory rather than talent. Our society craves ranks, positions, awards, and recognition. This whole page has to be turned.
Innovations and creativity should be appreciated than scores. Care should be taken to avoid mental distress caused by peer pressure and family matters. Schools should act as a second home as the child spends more time at the educational institution than home. Emotionally weak students should be brought forward by tutors or mentors and they have to act as a helping hand.
Technology has grown way too far to adapt to any kind of living patterns. Its proven that technical initiatives to introduce effective changes in the learning environment will reduce mental strain and educational pressure in students. Measures have to be taken to encourage the student to educate him/herself properly without having any external pressure. Studying shouldn’t be a burden for the learner. It should be interactive and entertaining. And it shouldn’t add to the mental stress they already have.
I believe that if schools can act as the relief place for the students, it will reverse the existing scenario. Work and education choices should habitual. Children should be given the right to choose their own future. When it comes to decision making, every child should be treated as an individual who has his/her own thoughts and emotions. Care should be taken to help the ones in need. Emotionally broken students have to treated accordingly and tutors should make sure that the peer pressure on such students is not destroying them.
Awareness programs and mentorship hours have to be arranged. Children with mild and chronic traumas should be given utmost care. Help should be given to the high schoolers to manage emotions. Discipline should be aimed rather than punishments. Together, parents and teachers should help our youngsters cop-up with mental and emotional outbursts.
